  • Welfare:The American Dream

    December 4, 2013 • Top Story • 1461

The White House spin machine was in full effect over the holiday weekend, this time, trying to convince the populous that the money the government is spending on welfare programs is the driving force behind economy.  Let that sink in.  What the WH fails to mention, or chooses not to, is that welfare is a zero-sum policy.  Taking money, in the form of taxes, from some people and giving it to other people drives nothing, except capitalist into insanity.

This may come as no surprise, but the Govt has a terrible track record when it comes to funding/managing technology and Healthcare.gov is no different. Hackers have taken to Obamacare’s flagship and found little to zero resistance to their efforts, but that shouldn’t surprise anyone. You see, this year alone the Federal Government will spend over $76 billion on information technology and of that $76b, it is estimated that $12.5b (700 different projects) may never bare any fruit.  That’s 1 billion of every 6 billion dollars being spent, will be wasted.  In tangible numbers, that is $50 from every taxpayer, or 10 e-copies of The Communist Manifesto.

The White House is at it again, spending your money on ‘Friends & Family’ deals for private businesses. On the surface, stimulus money for rail infrastructure seems like a great idea, it’s an old system that needs lots of work, But handing over hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to private companies is a bad policy.  It leaves us, that’s U.S., holding the bag when things go wrong, remember Solyndra? When the Govt. picks winners and losers, we all lose.

  • The Marketing of Thanksgiving Owns Us All

    November 30, 2013 • Top Story • 1353

An interesting phenomenon has taken the Free World by storm in recent decades and it is marketer’s dream.  Americans have long held the last Thursday in November as a time for family, football, and food.  But since 2001, marketers have capitalized on a down economy to push people from their families, alter menus, and sensationalize football beyond recognition. As more and more people alter their holiday plans around discount sales and doorbuster giveaways, the counter to the ‘commercialization’ of Thanksgiving has been ‘Small Business Saturday’ – a ‘grass roots’ push to get consumers to buy ‘local’ from independent small business owners.  And while it’s a great idea on principal, it’s also a marketing rouse.  Since 2010, American Express has pumped millions into marketing ‘Small Business Saturday’ to the masses, under the auspice of being the right thing to do, and it has worked. They rake in booku books every year and rightfully so, they work hard buying ads and supplying small businesses with perks that drive people into their stores. So next time a sandal wearing, hacky sack jockey tells you they shop Small Business Saturday instead of Black Friday because it’s the ‘right thing to do’, try not to shoot turkey stuffing out yours nose as you laugh.

  • White House Couldn’t Negotiate a Paper Bag

    November 27, 2013 • Top Story • 1267

The President, via John Kerry, essentially gave away the house to Iran this week. You see, usually when people negotiate, they give up something they value in exchange for something someone else values.  In the case of  Iran v. the rest of the sane world, Iran got everything they wanted, while conceding virtually nothing else.  The White House could have, at the very least, pushed to have Americans locked up in Iran released. Upon seeing the error of their ways, the White House has asked for an post hoc release.  Maybe it’s not too late for Obamacare?

    November 26, 2013 • Top Story • 1455

It’s the busiest time for traveling in the US and the Government controlled police force known as the TSA is making news.  According to a report by the General Accountability Office, the TSA spent $900 million over the last 5 years to train 3,000 ‘behavior detection officers.’  These ‘officers’ are ‘specially trained’ to screen ‘high-risk passengers based on behavioral indicators that indicate mal-intent.’  All that training has netted zero credible threats or arrests.  Keep that in mind as head out to visit your loved ones this holiday.

  • The Rise of Temp Jobs and The Looming Depression

    November 22, 2013 • Top Story • 1516

New data shows that temporary job hiring is WAY up and so is the stock market. While both indicators seem like positives on their own, combined, they tell a tale a country on the verge of a depression.  Combine those two factors with 5 straight years of deficit spending on welfare and the future looks grim.

  • The Assassination of the Holidays

    November 21, 2013 • Top Story • 1417

If you asked the average American what they thought about stores opening on Thanksgiving Night/Black Friday Morning, they would probably wax philosophically about how retailers are killing the holidays and they feel bad for the employees of said stores.  But the reality of the situation is that Black Friday and its subsequent sales are increasingly more popular every year. This is made evident by stories from around the country of people are already lining up to Thanksgiving Day early openings and the fact that many businesses do a large chunk of their 4th quarter sales on Black Friday.  Now only if the Federal Government took note.
